Women should be normalised in the gaming space, and should feel safe and included whilst enjoying their favourite media form, just like everyone else.

It shows women that, despite all the abuse we’ve faced and all the times we’ve been disregarded, we’re still valid. Seeing women being represented in the gaming space, whether that’s within video games themselves, or at important events and behind the scenes, is a reminder that we are actually welcome here. Only now are people slowly beginning to see this. Video games aren’t a ‘boys-only club’, they never have been. If you’re going to make fun of me, do it because I suck at the game 😆 Don’t abuse me for who I am.Įven in a more personal experience, I’ve been purposefully excluded and bullied by groups of men, who were supposedly my friends, in games solely because I was the only woman. I’ve been verbally abused more times than I can count and made fun of for being a woman - something I can’t help. Whilst I did manage to make a few friends, the rest of my experience has been pretty poor, and I’ve avoided voice chat ever since.

Moving forward to more recent years, I finally gained some courage to start using voice chat in some games. Growing up, the boys around me never really seemed to take me seriously, and didn’t think it was possible for me to enjoy video games the same amount as them. Unfortunately, I’ve always been excluded, solely based on the fact that I’m a girl. 🎮Īll I ever wanted was to be included, whether that was just in discussions about them or being able to play games with my peers. Video games are my biggest passion in life, they’re my favourite hobby and I just LOVE talking about them! They’ve always been my safe space. I’ve been seeing a lot of hate recently surrounding why video games should even bother representing women.Īs a woman, here’s my personal experience as to why representation to matters to me:
